How court decides spousal support
When determining spousal support (also known as alimony), the court will take many factors into account. The “supporting” party indicates the primary earner in the household, whether that person be male, female, or other. Below are just a few important aspects the court considers:
The length of the marriage—ten years is a common line between a “long” marriage and a “short” marriage
Each party’s assets and earnings
Whether the supported party paid for the education or training of the supporting party
The ability of the supported party to profitably work while caring for children in their custody
The age and health of each party
Any criminal convictions
What is the goal?
The primary goal of spousal support is to make sure that both parties are able to maintain the quality of life to which they have grown accustomed. This goal can become especially elusive when children are involved in a divorce or separation. Let us help you.
We believe in fighting for you and your family’s happiness and wellbeing.
